Our Impact

Creating opportunity through music: empowering young people to grow, connect, and shape their future.

Bolivia: Hombres Nuevos

In Santa Cruz, Bolivia, Playing for a Future partners with the Hombres Nuevos initiative, a long-standing social project based in the underserved neighborhood of Plan 3000. Since its founding, the program has combined education, social support, and music as a tool for positive development.

At the heart of the initiative is a youth orchestra, established to provide children and young people with a meaningful alternative to challenging social environments. Through structured music education, participants develop discipline, confidence, and the ability to collaborate, skills that extend far beyond the rehearsal room. Many students have also shown measurable improvements in their academic performance and personal development.

Today, the program is led by a dedicated team of former participants, reflecting its long-term impact and sustainability. Despite limited resources, including a shortage of instruments, maintenance equipment, and access to high-level teaching, the project continues to provide life-changing opportunities for young musicians.

Through this collaboration, Playing for a Future contributes to strengthening both individual potential and the broader musical ecosystem in the community, supporting a model where education and artistic expression create lasting social impact.

South Africa: Ronnie & Eileen Music Programme

In the Western Cape region of Cape Town, Playing for a Futurecollaborates with the Ronnie & Eileen Music Programme, one of the organization’s earliest and most influential partnerships.

Since 2009, the program has provided music education to children and young people in local communities, offering both artistic development and a sense of structure and belonging. A defining feature of the initiative is its strong internal continuity: many former students return as teachers, creating a sustainable cycle of mentorship and knowledge-sharing.

Today, the program is led by Professor Felicia Lesch, with key contributions from a new generation of educators, including former participants who have pursued further studies and now guide younger students. The program also includes early-stage initiatives such as an infant strings program, ensuring access from a young age.

Despite its success, the project faces ongoing challenges, particularly in securing sustainable funding for teachers and access to instruments, materials, and repertoire. Nevertheless, its impact is clear, both in the musical growth of its participants and in the strong community it continues to build.

Through its support, Playing for a Future helps ensure that this important work can continue to grow, providing access to music education and long-term opportunity for young people in the region.

“Music gave me more than just something to learn — it gave me confidence, connection, and a sense of possibility for the future.”
